About 2 miles of the disused Maidens and Dunure Light Railway track bed from Maybole Road, Alloway to Dunure Road, Doonfoot was transformed into a shared use walking and cycling path in 2010.
A new sensory garden and underpass at Dunure Road was constructed in 2023.
Sustrans is the primary organisation that distributes money from the Scottish Government's Active Travel budget. Other organisations also contribute to active travel infrastructure - typically this means a new path is mostly funded by external organisations and not the local council.
